What words capture the life of Betty Worland? Those who knew her best would say ethical, trust-worthy and self-controlled as an office-holder; devoted, sacrificial, consistent and fun as a mother; strong, loyal and supportive as a wife. Betty was the first-born of 13 children to Leon and Grace McComas Cole: Shirley Disser (Jack), Beverly Crosby (Joe), Deani Phares (Larry), Peachy Engle (Ernie), Ron Cole (Linda), Jackie Harding (George), Christy Browning (RD), Beth Cole, Sherry Krieger and Julie Wise (Tommy). She is preceded in death by her brothers Todd and Greg.
She married Jack Worland on September 28, 1951. They have two children: Robin Carmony (Bob) of Shelbyville and Randy Worland (Beth) who resides in Carmel, Indiana. She was blessed with not only seven grandchildren: Brooke Donley (Michael); Matthew Decker; Paul, Emmy, Chloe, Maddie, Ryle Worland, but also a wonderful great grand-daughter, Tatum Donley, who she adored and enjoyed.
Betty Worland was well-respected in the community. In 1949, she graduated with honors from Shelbyville High School and was presented the Commercial Award by The Shelbyville Business and Professional Woman’s Club. After enjoying her time as a stay-at-home mom, Betty found employment alongside her long-time friend, Goldie Craige, in the Shelbyville High School Office before taking a job as secretary to Probationary Officer, Preach Longstreet. From there, she was hired by Judge Charles O’Conner as Bailiff of the Shelby County Court. In the city elections of 1979 and 1983, Betty was elected and re-elected to the office of Shelbyville’s Clerk-Treasurer. Again, in the 1986 county elections, she won the office of Shelby County Recorder. Through these various positions, Betty built a reputation of respect, reliability and not given to gossip.
Her daughter and son deeply and sincerely loved their mother. She would easily make the list of top three most influential people in their lives. Robin and Randy conversed with her daily and cherished her unconditional love. They both praise God for giving them such an excellent and loyal mom!
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 28th at 2:00pm with visitation beginning at 1:00pm at First Baptist Church of Shelbyville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SCUFFY.
